UNDER A LANDSLIDE OF STARS
As a testament to the power and depth of his songwriting, Malinowski’s music has been by covered by artists ranging from Sturgill Simpson, Diplo, Dove Cameron, The Interrupters, Grandson, and Frank Turner. He has collaborated with everyone from Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Philly House Legend King Britt to Darryl Jenifer of D.C. hardcore pioneers Bad Brains.
“Under A Landslide of Stars” is Malinowski’s first record in over a decade and is a sonic to return to his original love; the human voice, harmony and hymns. “My early memories were of singing hymns at school. I always found the sound of groups singing together profound,’ says Malinowski.
“Under A Landslide of Stars” takes choirs from across the continent; from gospel singers in New Orleans featuring the work of friends Rick Nelson (Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers) and Clint Maedgen Of Preservation Hall Jazz Band to a 150 person community choir recorded in the Pacific Northwest of Victoria B.C.
The album oscillates between expansive, huge and anthemic to intimate, personal and introspective. ‘In broadstrokes the album is about love and devotion, and how those manifest in such wildly different ways on group levels as opposed to in intimate familial ways.” Says Malinowski, “I was writing about the deep love I have for my wife and son Finn (Deeper Than Blue, Half-Moon Bay) and then juxtaposing that against pseudo-fanatical characters I conjured up in my mind that are expressing love for their God(s) in twisted and violent ways (Holy Guns, Die 4 Love).”
The album was recorded between Malinowski’s home studio and in the legendary Armoury Studios in Vancouver. “I knew I wanted to get that big big ‘Little Mountain Sound’ for the drums that Vancouver was famous for. It was the sound I was hearing to boom alongside 150 voices singing. So who better to help than engineer Paul Silveira who worked alongside Bruce Fairbairn during that time.”
Taking the album to its completion Malinowski employed the skillful vision of Davey Badiuk (Liam Gallagher/Dragonette). “I knew Davey would get this record—-I called him up and played him the music and he got so passionate about it. I knew he would make it huge.”
And so was completed the big boom-bash of “Under A Landslide of Stars”, a sonic journey of intimate and exponential love. “We live in wild fucking times” smiles Malinowski. “Sometimes I forget the stars above. I forget how small it all is under that landslide of stars.”
